History of Lean In Network I Energy
What would you do if you weren’t afraid?
This question posed in Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In, is at the very heart of LEAN IN NETWORK I Energy, whose global mission is to empower women in energy to advance their careers while advocating for gender parity in an industry currently transforming itself. Inspired by what is possible, a partnership with LeanIN.org, was formed in 2015.
Within two years, the 100% volunteer led organization grew quickly to 40 mentorship circles with almost 1500 members in all areas across the energy value chain. Our members also represent all job functions and titles within energy, from interns to C-level executives. With success of our programs, we were accepted into a finite partnership program under the LeanIn.org umbrella, becoming one of just 10 such non-profit organizations globally.
With growth came the need for infrastructure. In 2018 our first Board of Directors, composed of accomplished executive women and men in energy, was commissioned. That same year, we obtained our non-profit status in the United States as a 501(c)(3) organization.
Starting in 2019, LEAN IN NETWORK I Energy grew its regional, special interest and company-led communities globally. Small group and “flash” or 1:1 mentoring matched through Chronus was instituted to pair mentors and mentees based on unique wants or needs. Our partnerships with companies and organizations has steadily grown, increasing our visibility and value to diverse constituencies.
With the global pandemic beginning in 2020, and its disproportionate impact on women, we have seen increased engagement globally in our virtual approach. Additionally, in 2021, Lean In Network I Energy became more active in global energy conferences, notably Africa Oil Week, Women’s Global Leadership Conference, the 23rd World Petroleum Congress and the Energy Education of the Future forum. In addition to participation in panels, global discussions and networking presentations by our members within the energy arena, our members are also called on to participate in panels and in global conversations relevant to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
2022 has brought a global focus and new leadership to the organization.
Denise Mannix, SVP of Equity in Leadership, is the current President and Linda Ibrahim, Chief Accounting Office and VP of Tax of Vantage Drilling, is Vice President. Supported by an active Board of Directors, network champions and a mobilized membership of global volunteers, the organization is firmly focused on the growth of LEAN IN NETWORK I Energy by providing needed resources, networking and advocacy in order for women in energy to reach their career goals.
