Lean In Network | Energy Work on Your Terms Masterclass

October 19th, 2022 at 11:30 AM CDT (Virtual Event) 06:30 PM Amsterdam

Work on Your Terms Masterclass

Free – Only 24 spots available

We are Tessa & Annemarie, both mums of 3 kids. Tessa even has triplets! Jointly we have spent over 40 years in ‘big corporate’ and financial industries. We are kindred souls wanting to make work a place where you can thrive, not just survive. A place where you can work with your talents, make an impact, so you can come home and be energized for life with family and friends.  Often though, we felt quite the opposite. We have had endless discussions over coffee and tea to contemplate why we sometimes felt stuck and what would be needed for us to do our best work.

Now that we deeply understand this environment, we would like to share our victories and battle scars with you. Hence, we took the initiative to start ‘Working on Your Terms’, your personal guide that hands you real insights, tools and strategies so that you can get to a place where you feel you can thrive.  You can find more about us on www.workonyourterms.company.

Free masterclass ‘Inner mentor’ – with videos

In our masterclass, we will be working with you on one of the foundations of Working on Your Terms which we call ‘the inner mentor’. In addition to the great knowledge and advice you get externally from  mentors and friends, you also have an ‘inner mentor’ who is always available and whom, when consulted, has great wisdom to share.  That is what we will focus on in our masterclass.

In order to make the most of our time together we would like to ask you to do some preparation. The prep will take max 30 minutes (we know you are busy after all!), and comprises watching the first 2 videos and doing the worksheets of our masterclass. We have made that available for you via the linkhttps://www.workonyourterms.company/masterclass_special/. After you register, you receive a link to our video platform where you can watch the first 2 video’s and find the worksheets.

In the masterclass itself, we will work with you to distill real insights from this prework. At the end of the session you will be clear on when you are at your best at work (this will help you determine those projects or jobs that truly give you energy) and you will have discovered what tools you have available already to get out of a work ‘low’ or ‘dip’. We will also hand you some extra tools for that.

Lean In Energy: May Coffee Connections (PKT)

This year’s Monthly Coffee Connections will focus on Christine Williams’ book, Gaslighted: How the Oil and Gas Industry Shortchanges Women Scientists.

The research in this book is a powerful commentary on the Energy Industry and its treatment of women – not only women scientists. ‘Organizational gaslighting’ is vividly explained being something usually not referred to in women’s self-help career books. As the author says, “This book is an effort to take women seriously . . . insider accounts reveal how male domination of this industry truly works, and what is at stake in attempting to challenge it.”

Join us as we journey through the findings of the research discussing its implications for women in the workplace, as we come to understand about what Christine became convinced of – “that women do not leave high-paying professional careers unless they are forced out.”

Last month we discussed chapters 3 & 4 focusing on “The Stayers” and “Voluntary Separations” in the oil & gas industry. This month we will discuss chapters 5 & 6 “Corperate Downsizing” and “Organizational Gaslighting.”

The University of Texas at Austin's Energy Symposium with Christine Williams

Abstract: The oil and gas industry is one of the richest and most powerful industries in the world. In recent years, company avowals in support of diversity, much-touted programs for "women in STEM," and, most importantly, a tight labor market with near parity in women pursuing geoscience credentials might lead us to expect progress for women in this industry's corporate ranks. Yet, for all the talk of "the great crew change," the industry remains overwhelmingly white and male. In her new book, Sociologist Christine L. Williams asks, where are the women? To answer this question, Williams embarked on a decade-long investigation—one involving one hundred in-depth interviews, a longitudinal survey, and ethnographic research—that allowed her to observe the industry in times of boom and bust. She found that when the industry expands, women may be able to walk through the door, but when the industry contracts, the door becomes a revolving one, whirling ever faster, as companies retreat to their white male core. These gendered outcomes are obscured by firms' stated commitments to diversity in hiring and the language of merit. The result is organizational gaslighting, a radical dissonance between language and practice that Williams exposes for all.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Christine Williams is Professor of Sociology and the Elsie and Stanley E. (Skinny) Adams, Sr. Centennial Professor in Liberal Arts. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on gender, race, and class inequality in the workplace. She also studies sexuality, homophobia, and sexual harassment in a wide variety of workplace settings. Dr. Williams' most recent publications analyze gender inequality and diversity culture in the oil and gas industry. Professor Williams is the recipient of two-lifetime achievement awards from the American Sociological Association: the Jessie Bernard Award in recognition of her scholarly work on gender and society, and the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for her contributions to understanding organizations, occupations, and work. Dr. Williams served as the 111th President of the American Sociological Association in 2020.
